Backyard Maul
Pitt 13
West Virginia 45
Linebacker Scott McKillop just shook his head when someone asked him how West Virginia quarterback Pat White was able to trample Pitt's defense for 220 rushing yards Thursday night.
"I really can't say," McKillop said. "I didn't get close enough (to know)."
West Virginia (9-1, 6-0) ran 72 offensive plays. White had 23 carries, Slaton 34 carries and one reception -- that's 81 percent of the touches in the Mountaineers' offense.
It added up to a stunning 451 rushing yards.
"That's got to be a Pitt record. Please tell me it is," Wannstedt said. "Tell me nothing could be worse than that."
Actually, it's not. Virginia Tech amassed 500 rushing yards against the Panthers in 1993.
So, it was not a record, but it was still a stinker.
"What can you say? It's not tackling, not getting off blocks," Wannstedt said. "It's ugly and it's bad and it's unacceptable."
