College Football Briefs
A look around the world of College Football with excerpts from some of America's greatest writers.
WVU narrowly escapes upset
Mountaineers start strong, hold off East Carolina to remain undefeated
"It was almost as if our guys were all there for one big picnic," he said. "They were just waiting for something to happen."
"You're going to have to call Dr. Ruth or Mr. Phil or whoever to find out what happened psychologically with our guys today," Rodriguez said. "The intensity level was not what we're accustomed to at West Virginia. Maybe at other places, that would have been OK, but I preach that the intensity of West Virginia football never wavers.
"But, it did today. Lesson learned."
Pitt beats Youngstown State, Thinks they're back on track
The most news worthy thing to come out of Pitts scrimmage with the Penguins is that they want new uniforms
"I hope this doesn't get me in trouble, but I really wish we could go back to those old uniforms," Pitt quarterback Tyler Palko said after the Panthers' 41-0 win against Youngstown State yesterday at Heinz Field. "Those things are sweet. Those get us back to the days of what Pitt really is. I like that. Hopefully, we can change back. Hopefully, we can keep them for the Rutgers game [Friday] because those are good-luck uniforms.
Its a good train of thought, win 41-0 with the mustard pants, wear them next week and win 41-0 nothing again.
Too bad theres no more Penguins on the list.
Big East Bursts wide open
This is what conference play is all about. Instead of what looked to be a one game season for the Big East, so much more is on the line than just the West Virginia/Louisville game. Now every game counts and any team and I mean any team can steal the BCS bid.
No. 1 West Virginia 1-0
Being back-to-back Big East champs, West Virginia needs to get knocked off from their pedestal atop the Big East. The huge road win at Syracuse has them at 1-0 and now that USF road trip looks a little bit more daunting.
No. 2 South Florida 1-0
What a way to open their Big East existance. Plowing through Louisville at home the Bull's are in the driver seat to win the Big East. There is plenty of football to be played, but getting the Cardinals out of the way can not hurt.
No. 3 Louisville 0-1
What a way to open their Big East existance. But they are still Louisville and will no doubt bounce back from this game. However is one loss too many?
No. 4 Connecticut
They have yet to open their league play and that could be looked at as a plus with a young team that should be peaking soon.
No. 5 Pitt
Their 3 losses our out the window when Big East play starts Saturday against Rutgers. That game will go along way to sorting out the middle of the pack. Pitt still has Palko and Lee and possibly even more mustard pants. They're on the road at Louisville and Morgantown, definitly a long shot to finish the Big East with a winning record.
No. 6 Syracuse 0-1
They are a tough draw in the Carrier Dome but they have already dropped two decisions there. The players just do not fit the system but if they can turn things around, perhaps they could steal a bowl bid from Pitt or Rutgers.
No. 7 Rutgers
Greg Schiano knows losing. Its ingrained in him, his players and his staff. But Rutgers is always good for a Big East upset somewhere down the road. They get to host the Panthers next week and the Mountaineers later on. They picked up 2 non-conference wins, bowl eligibilty is not out of the question.
No. 8 Cincinnati
They are not far off from either Pitt or Rutgers but too far to make any impact in the Big East race. The bearcats will be good for one or two Big East wins.
Changes spark Pirates to win
The Pirates ended a four-game losing streak and secured a 63rd victory, assuring they will not have a 100-loss season.
Im pretty sure they pop champagne or something to celebrate that
