March Madness 2006 Coverage
I. Point Spread Oddities
II. Odds to win it all
III. Rule Changes
If no.15 winthrop defeats no.2 Tennessee it won't even be considered an upset, thats usually a good sign the selection committee has no idea what they are doing. The Shockers out of Wichita State are only +7 compared to other no.15 seeds:
Belmont +20
Davidson +12
Penn +16
The way the line has been going in the Syracuse Texas A&M 5-12 matchup, it looks more and more like this game will go to a pick em, its crazy considering Syracuse just won the Big East tourney and the Aggies were one of the last bubble teams put in, but Vegas is always smarter, so the Aggies look like a great play here.
Is there any game that is generating less interest than Montana and Nevada at 3pm in Salt Lake City, Utah? If this were a perfect world Texas A&M would be playing Nevada, and Syracuse and Montana. You never want a matchup of two power conferences and a matchup of two mid-majors. This is a glaring mistake from the selection committee that nobody is picking up on.
How the hell did Air Force and Utah State get in the tournament? Either way Airforce is getting 8.5 points against Illinois who gets sent out to San Diego for nooo reason and Utah State is getting 6 points against Washington.
Michigan State, a popular elite 8 team is only giving 4 points to George Mason, looks like a sucker line to me.
Looking at are bracket in Auburn Hills, WVU has moved up to 4 point favorites and climbing while Iowa has fallen to 7 point favorites, Northwestern State has a shooting mans chance in that game.
One of the biggest favorites I've ever seen in an 8-9 game is Arkansas this year as 4.5 favorites over Bucknell.
You though no.2 tennessee was getting no respect against 15th seed Wintrhop, how about no.1 Memphis just a measly -13 over Oral Roberts. What a vote of confidence for conference USA. Lets look at some other no.1 team point spreads:
UCONN -22.5
Duke -25
Villanova line hasnt been posted yet since Monmouth just won the play in game but expect it to be around 19
the tenth seeded Wolfpack are favored over the seventh seeded Cal golden bears by 2 points

npocs strategy for the playin game
Winning a conference tournament should be enough to guarantee yourself a spot in the madness that is the first thursday or friday of the tournament. No team should ever be robbed of that. So instead there should be four play in games involving the 8 bubble teams.
Wouldnt you rather of watched Cincinnati take on Air Force or Michigan against Utah State rather than Hamtpon and Monmouth? They can make an event out of Tuesday night, and have four games going on, starting at 7, 730, 8 and 830 creating a march madness feel to it on a Tuesday night. The money will be there, the bubble teams will love the idea, the losers can move on to the NIT and ALL conference champions are guaranteed their spot.
